The Genre-Benders: A Deep Dive Into My Latest Playlists

My current rotation is a bit of a chaotic map. It moves from high gloss industrial pop to the kind of melancholic indie that feels best played in a car at 2 AM. There isn’t much middle ground right now; I am either looking for something that hits with a heavy, distorted edge or something that leans into atmospheric storytelling.

Between a few standout albums that have redefined my daily commute and a handful of tracks I have had on a literal loop, my Recently Played list is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Here is a breakdown of what is actually worth a listen right now.

The Album Spotlight: A Trilogy of Audacity and Intrigue

My current album rotation offers a dynamic trio, each bringing its own unique flavor to the table. These records haven’t just been playing; they have been immersive experiences.

Ashnikko – Smoochies

If you are looking for music that is both fierce and fun, confrontational and catchy, then Ashnikko is your artist. Smoochies isn’t just an album; it is a declaration. Ashnikko has a masterful way of blending industrial beats with pop sensibilities, often weaving in themes of empowerment and societal critique with a playful, almost cartoonish edge.

Every track feels like an adrenaline shot, a confident strut through a world that is both vibrant and a little chaotic. The production is sharp, the lyrics are witty and edgy, and Ashnikko’s vocal delivery is on such a spectrum. It is the perfect soundtrack for days when you need a burst of energy or a bit of glorious rebellion. I don’t think there’s been a day where I haven’t got in the car on my morning commute and immediately played a track off this album.

I have a great feeling about the Smoochies Tour – that it will almost be an artistic performance and a community for mass self-expression.

vianova – Hit It!

We shift gears slightly but maintain the high-octane energy with vianova’s Hit It!. This album is a revelation, and mid-track you will think you’re listening to a completely different genre or track. The whiplash is real, but in the best kind of way.

Hit It! demands active listening; it is not background music – for me anyway. Each track builds and evolves, employing pulsing rhythms and distorted synths to create an immersive environment. There is a sense of urgency running throughout the entire record, a feeling of being propelled forward by an unseen force. For anyone looking for cutting-edge electronic music that pushes boundaries, this is definitely an essential listen.

President – King Of Terrors EP

Adding a darker and more brooding texture to the mix is President’s King Of Terrors. This EP has been on repeat for me since the day it dropped. It is less about background noise and more about an addictive experience; my ears just gravitate toward the way these songs are structured.

I love the unpredictable shifts from melodic singing to raw screams and those heavy chuggy guitars that anchor the sound. The themes lean heavily into introspection and existentialism, making it the perfect record to put on when you want to get lost in your own thoughts. It is a masterclass in building tension and atmosphere, showing exactly how music can evoke powerful emotions through a mix of restraint and pure sonic texture.

Track by Track: Singles That Sing to My Soul

Beyond the cohesive narratives of full-length albums, three specific tracks have carved out a permanent home in my Recently Played list.

  • James Marriott – California Rain and Car Lights
James Marriott has become a staple of my daily listening lately. California Rain is a beautifully melancholic indie rock anthem that perfectly encapsulates a feeling of wistful longing. His vocals are earnest and emotive, carrying a weight that feels deeply personal. The chorus is one of those moments you cannot help but sing along to. After the marketing for this track built up such a massive craving for it to finally drop on streaming platforms, I am so glad it is finally out in the world.

On the other hand, Car Lights has a more immediate and urgent feel. The track features some truly passionate belts that highlight the raw feeling Marriott puts into his work. There is a layer of depth here as well, potentially discussing a same sex relationship or interest and the struggle of coming to terms with making that an element that is seen by others. I adore the honesty and the raw, unpolished emotion in this track. Both songs showcase Marriott’s talent for crafting deeply felt, incredibly catchy indie tunes that stay with you long after the final chord.
  • Sofia Isella – Above The Neck
This track is a strange yet captivating piece that combines intricate production with a truly unique vocal performance. Isella’s voice is ethereal yet powerful, drifting effortlessly over a bed of inventive electronic textures. Above The Neck has an almost hypnotic quality, drawing you into its world with nuanced layers and poetic lyrics.

People have shared wildly different opinions on this track, ranging from controversial takes and genuine disgust to high praise and support for its focus on social issues. Personally, I think it is a really creative take on the sex industry and taboo subjects. It is uncomfortable, for sure, but that is where its power lies. Her stage presence when performing this live gives off a vibe of calm mania – if that is even a thing. She is a relatively new artist on my radar, but the fact that all of her songs offer sharp commentary on real-world issues is her unique selling point. It is definitely what drew me to her discography in the first place.

Honourable Mentions: The Eternal Stalwarts

Of course, no discussion of my current listening habits would be complete without acknowledging the comfort listens, the bands that act as the foundation of my musical taste.

The 1975 remain a constant presence. Their genre-bending pop, with its intelligent lyrics and often nostalgic soundscapes, is always a welcome listen. Similarly, Bring Me The Horizon are never far from reach. Their evolution from metalcore titans to alternative rock has been fascinating to witness, and their catalog offers the perfect blend of aggression and anthemic hooks.

Both bands are currently in that phase where anticipation for new releases and potential tour announcements runs high. Until then, I will be spinning their classics on loop while keeping a close eye on their socials for any hint of what is coming next.
